Noted on that. You might want to consider upgrading to Kumander 2.0 RC1, as some packages in Kumander 1.1 are missing in Debian 12.

Hey so i tried installing the new kumander linux since the update and i was greeted by a beautiful installer screen but it says the installation media cannot be mounted and im not able to continue? Im installing from a usb flash onto a laptop that only has 1 drive and i dont care if that drive is wiped i only use the pc to test distros out, any advice would be appreciated thanks in advance, - joseph

Before the installer loaded i did see some kind of error repeat itself over and over in the command line plain text.

Hello Joseph and thank you for the kind words. I have not seen this issue so I checked in with ChatGPT o1. Here's what he said:

In short, most Debian-live-based “can’t mount installation media” errors come down to a mismatch in how the USB was created, a Secure Boot or UEFI/Legacy mismatch, or an incorrect partition label.

Here are a few possibilities and troubleshooting steps you might look into:

Incorrect USB Formatting / Writing Method: If using Rufus or another tool, make sure to use the proper “DD” (disk image) write mode rather than an “ISO” write mode. Debian-based ISOs sometimes have issues being recognized properly when written in ISO mode.
Ventoy Quirks: If using Ventoy, the ISO sometimes needs a little coaxing to boot correctly. Make sure to use the latest version of Ventoy, or try a direct “dd” write from Linux.
UEFI vs. Legacy Boot Issues: Try to disable Secure Boot
Check for Corruption: Verify the checksum (e.g., SHA256) of the downloaded ISO file. The SHA256 sum of Kumander Linux 2.0 RC1 ISO is: c7877ecf6da7941df1d7f0230d9a51c9be773f161bb597d0e517a065d69ef8e5

    Hope this helps,
    Roy

  • cypher106tSat Jan 11, 2025 8:57 pm
That did fix it but now I am stuck on "Configuring Network" which i will research
  • cypher106tSat Jan 11, 2025 9:05 pm
The hang is caused by an ipv6 process which can be killed in debain with cntrl + F2 to access command line but its not working for me in this case

Hmm, yeah, there was a similar issue with Kumander Linux 1.x. As long as it detects a wireless connection near by, it insists on trying to configure it no matter what.

Not 100% sure this is the same issue, but thanks for the feedback! I will look into it and fix it before the final 2.0 release.

Uff, this means that the installer somehow failed to create your user during the installation. Wait, I will look into this right away, and report back to you soon...

Ok, I'm back. Sorry it took a while, I discovered a few other critical issues I had to deal with:

    1. Even if Wifi was setup correctly during the installation, you couldn't use it in a session - fixed
    2. Due to recent changes in Debian 12, around 30% of the icons in the Software Center were missing (deep rabbit hole) - fixed
    3. Issue related to using PIP for installing packages for Python - fixed

Regarding your issue I have done the following:

    1. Added the entry "Start offline installer" to the ISO menu, which uses a different configuration that will not try to connect to the internet (ignores Wi-Fi)
    2. Reduced the timeouts regarding IPv6 connection testing to 5 seconds

--- Hang on, I just noticed it doesn't fully work. Wait, I will remake it ISO ---

This version will become Kumander Linux 2.0 Release Candidate 2. Please let me know if you still have any issues with it.

UPDATE: Ok, I have been down to the depths of Hades itself and back, in regards to the rabbit hole that is the Debian Installer (d-i), Live Build and preseed files! There is just not much information on it online, hence ChatGPT o1's suggestions are not very helpful and even misleading.

Anyway, I believe this should all be working well now. Here is what I have done:

    1. Added the new "Start offline installer" that actually works as expected (Wi-Fi is ignored)
    2. Fixed the issue with the login screen reporting about "Theme not working properly" on slower PCs/laptops
    3. Upgraded the Web-Greeter to the latest version (3.5.2 > 3.5.3)
    4. Fixed various preseed issues regarding locale, timezone settings and more

    Try it here: https://dl.kumander.org/kumander-linux- ... -amd64.iso

I hope this solves all the current problems. If not, please let me know.

Kumander Linux is designed to look the way that it looks out of the box, which is a style that is inspired by Windows 7.

Users are naturally free to download and install whatever templates they like, but there is no guarantee if they will work or not.

I understand kumander should look like windows7, but I think it would be cool if it had a classic theme like windows7
