Upgrade issue ?

I just did a fresh install of Kumander 1.1, rebooted, and run "sudo apt update" & then "sudo apt upgrade" in terminal.
I then rebooted to find that instead of the login screen there is only a black screen with a blinking cursor.
I did another install on another drive with identical results. I'm afraid to upgrade my main Kumander pc for fear that it will kill it too. Can you help me understand what is going on? Thanks.

Hi Ercouper and thanks for the heads up!

Yes, I also noticed some odd things with 1.1 after releasing it. It is strange, as it was created in exactly the same way as 1.0, except for a few additional software packages.

For now I recommend staying on 1.0. I will rollback the 1.1 release until I get this figured out properly.

I do have full time work these days, and as such have very little extra time for Kumander Linux sadly. I will do my best to get back to this ASAP.

Thanks, Roy. I realize the need to spend time making money. I just hope you don't give up on Kumander as it is a very nice Debian w/Xfce distro.. I will go back to 1.0 for now until 2.0(?). Thanks for all your hard work and for the reply.

I can't seem to find 1.0 for download. I did try 1.0RC2 with the same result though. Is there somewhere that I can download 1.0?

You are most welcome. And no worries, Kumander Linux will always be an extremely high priority to me, as it is my own way to escape Windows. And I am NOT going back!

I use it every day to make money, so I will definitely continue working on it in the future.

I rolled back (removed) the 1.1 version from the download page. As such, the default version there is now 1.0.

Well, I downloaded 1.0, installed it on two of my pc's, one AMD and one Intel based and then upgraded both installs from terminal with "sudo apt upgrade". Upon reboot, same blank screen with blinking cursor (no login screen).

Please realize that I'm not trying to make work for you, Roy. I'm just trying to figure out why I can't do the usual upgrade from terminal that I routinely do on my Debian based drives (Spiral, MX, Parrot, Voyager, Sparky). Thanks for your patience.

I think the problem most likely is here: libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37/oldstable-security 2.42.1-1~deb11u1 amd64 [upgradable from: 2.40.3-2~deb11u2]

The login system uses webkit 2. I remember having some problems getting it to work properly, but since it is the only login system that features that beautiful Windows 7 look-alike login, I chose to keep it.

I think some changes/hacks I made there are being overwritten by the update. Now that I think about it, I was supposed to "apt-mark hold" certain packages in order to prevent future overrides, but I never did that. Hmmmmm...

Maybe you could try to hold just that one package and see if it solves it?

Yes, it must have something to do with login. I replaced lightdm with sddm and everything is good........except the cool Windows like login screen is gone.

I will try another install and apt-mark hold libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37/oldstable-security 2.42.1-1~deb11u1 amd64 and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks.

That was it!

Synaptic says no mo' updates available after taking 117 without a hiccup.
I think 1.1 should be OK too unless you know of other problems (?).
